This is a short hands-on tutorial on creating SystemTap 7 RPM packages for Enterprise Linux, including, but not limited to, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS and Scientific Linux (SL).

SystemTap provides free software (GPL) infrastructure to simplify the gathering of information about the running Linux system. This assists diagnosis of a performance or functional problem. SystemTap eliminates the need for the developer to go through the tedious and disruptive instrument, recompile, install, and reboot sequence that may be otherwise required to collect data. SystemTap provides a simple command line interface and scripting language for writing instrumentation for a live running kernel plus user-space applications.” — source http://sourceware.org/systemtap/.

NOTE: The commands on this guide were tested on both CentOS 6.2 and Scientific Linux 6.2 (2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.x86_64) virtual machines, using the SQLite 3.7.12.

To build the RPM packages we first need a set an RPM development environment as described on the article: How to set up a build environment for RPM packages on Enterprise Linux.

Once the development environment is correctly setup, login as root and install the additional required packages:

Since SystemTap requires a low-level interaction with Linux kernel, we need to install some additional packages, specifically built for each kernel and distribution version:

For CentOS 6:

Copy the SystemTap source code to the ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES:

$ cd ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES
$ wget http://sourceware.org/systemtap/ftp/releases/systemtap-1.7.tar.gz

To create the RPM packages you can use the following commands:

$ cd ~/rpmbuild/SPECS
$ rpmbuild -ba systemtap.spec

You should now find the RPM packages at ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/$(uname -m).
