By Huw Davies Thursday, 5th April 2012

So this is the end of my first week as Product manager here at CatN and there has been a lot to learn and do! I come from a Hosted Exchange background and while there are plenty of similarities there is also a lot of new stuff to learn here which is great!

I’ve been in one of the DC’s moving a SAN and installing servers, helping me get a better understanding of the hardware side of the business, as well as getting the lowdown on the existing services and services being launched over the next 6 months. I’ve also got to grips with writing wiki articles and learnt the basics of wiki mark-up language.

Installing WordPress Multi-Site on Apache localhost using Sub-Domains

By Neil Sweeney Friday, 30th March 2012

Wordpress-dark

One of the often missed features of WordPress is the ability to run more than one site off it. It’s thought that WordPress can be a bit bloated at time with the number of database connections it does, but so long as you keep those connections under control with page caching, then WordPress can have many sites running from a single install; this is exactly how WordPress.com (a network of hosted WordPress blogs) works.

There are a number of blogs out there that will explain to you how to install a WordPress Multi-Site on your localhost, but they’ll use the sub-folder method, which is fine but I like working from the root. So I’ll try to explain why I use a multi-site install, how you can use it and will explain how to get it working on your localhost with sub-domains.

This week I’ve been working at Fubra Ltd and focusing on the design side of things. I’ve been working with Nick mainly. Although I didn’t have a major understanding of the technical side of CatN after researching a bit and talking to the developers I began to understand the idea of vClusters and pClusters. When I arrived I was given a task brief for the week, but first I had to research some more about CatN, vClusters and pClusters.

Link Building For Your Site

By Ricky Dawn Friday, 13th January 2012

SEO

Link building is one of the, if not the most important parts of any SEO campaign, it is also one of the hardest and most time consuming.

However there are easier ways to build links, some of which I mentioned at the end of an earlier post (Getting your site indexed), but these links are not very powerful and are only really good for getting your site indexed.

There are many ways you can build links to your site, some of which I have listed below.

The good Ol’ fashioned link request emails

This tactic has been around for a long time, is probably one of the most used, and can provide the best return, you can potentially gain a lot of quality links by simply asking Webmasters to link to your site. This tactic works much better with more established sites with some authority rather then new sites.

The only problem with this is that it can be very time consuming and with more web savvy site owners today they are sometimes reluctant to place a link on their site, as this would negatively affect their Google page rank.

A good trick when using this tactic is to provide something in return, for example I check the Webmasters site for crawl, code and SEO errors and inform them on these before asking for a link, I then keep a conversation going with them until eventually I ask for a link.

Feel your WordPress plugin page needs a little something more? Then try adding a banner!

It seems this little under advertised feature of the WordPress.org plugin directory is really easy to do and makes your page look that much better. I recently added a banner to Simply Poll plugin page and it looks really swish now.
