Apache is web server software that was developed for UNIX based systems originally, but is now widely available including Windows and MacOS X. Apache is developed and maintained by community developers as the program is open source and free to use. Due to the wide availability and cross platform compatibility, Apache is the most common web server for http requests and in 2009 server 56% of all websites. Apache functionality can be extended by installing compiled modules. These modules can add support for various web demands, such as scripting languages like Perl Python and PHP. the module mod_php adds support for the scripting language to Apache web server. Apache can be used to server static and dynamic web content, and the majority of web application are written initially to be hosted by Apache. Due to the extensible functionality, Apache can easily be adapted to provide the perfect environment for hosting huge varieties of web applications and sites.
