Content Management System. A CMS is a system for managing the work of multiple users in a collaborative environment. The aim of a CMS is to allow multiple users to submit content collaboratively, help to store and retrieve data, make it easier to write content, and to improve communication between users, whether admins or subscribers. A web CMS is specifically designed to simplify the publishing of web based content. A web CMS will be installed on the storage spaced offered by a users web host, allowing site users to add and edit content through an administration dashboard on the web site, or by uploading files through an FTP client. Common Web CMS's, and the most popular are, WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal, phpBB and vBulletin. These CMS's are open source, so the community of users can write plugins to expand the functionality of the CMS. This is an imprint feature of web CMS's, as the flexibility required to suit various types of web sites is easily achieved through plugin development communities.
